A Second Helping of Socratic Seminar

Part 2 of our Socratic seminar, which quickly turned into an open class lecture.
Here's what I was able to capture:
  • Arguments are a way to search for the truth
  • A Right is something that other people must honor
    • Example: having a right to cross the street safely
  • One person's right creates another person's obligation
  • Saying "I am entitled to my opinion"
    • doesn't get us closer to the truth (ends the conversation)
    • one person having an opinion doesn't require another person to do/feel anything
  • "an opinion is functionally worthless until someone else 'adopts' it"
  • En Loco Parenti
    • "in the place of a parent"
  • Syllogism
    • simplest form of outgoing
  • Judgement becomes hugely important
