A Second Helping of Socratic Seminar
Part 2 of our Socratic seminar, which quickly turned into an open class lecture.
Here's what I was able to capture:
- Arguments are a way to search for the truth
- A Right is something that other people must honor
- Example: having a right to cross the street safely
- One person's right creates another person's obligation
- Saying "I am entitled to my opinion"
- doesn't get us closer to the truth (ends the conversation)
- one person having an opinion doesn't require another person to do/feel anything
- "an opinion is functionally worthless until someone else 'adopts' it"
- En Loco Parenti
- "in the place of a parent"
- Syllogism
- simplest form of outgoing
- Judgement becomes hugely important
