Vocabulary We Need

Meme: a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc., that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users.

  • Not one minute goes by without a new meme popping up on my explore page on Instagram.
Virus: a piece of code which is capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data.

  • I hear that many people get viruses on their computers, gladly I'm not one of them.
Viral: an image, video, advertisement, etc., that is circulated rapidly on the Internet.

  • Almost all the posts I see on social media instantly becomes viral after a few reposts.
Blog: a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.

  • All the students in my AP English class, including myself, have their own blogs.
Wiki: a website that allows collaborative editing of its content and structure by its users.

  • There are many websites that include Wiki, for example Wiki-how.
URL: the address of a World Wide Web page.

  • All our blogs have a designated URL.
Website: a location connected to the Internet that maintains one or more pages on the World Wide Web.

  • I'm typing these sentences, on my blog that can be accessed through a website.
www: acronym for the World Wide Web.
  • Almost all URL's have www in the beginning of them.
Internet: a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

  • Almost everyone I know or know of has heard of the famous brainwashing internet.
2.0: used to denote a superior or more advanced version of an original concept, product, service, etc.

  • I tend to joke around and say that I'm the 2.0 version of my older sister, obviously a better version.
Open source: denoting software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified.

  • The way our English class is advancing is through open source learning.
Technologymachinery and equipment developed from the application of scientific knowledge.
  • Our world is so submersed in technology that physical connection is becoming extinct.
