Gatsby notes and thoughts: chapter 6

My class, once again, started reading Gatsby again and we're on chapter 6.

Here are my thoughts:

Vocabulary Learned
Laudable: deserving praise
Notoriety: being known for/famous for a bad quality
Meretricious: seen as attractive but in truth not really
Conceit: excessively proud
Ineffable: too great to explain
Gaudiness: excessively showy
Ramifications: a consequence of an action
Turgid: swollen

-James Gatz is Jay Gatsby's real name
-The beginning of the chapter is explaining Gatsby's life story so far
-Gatsby didn't become a drinker himself because of seeing how Cody got when he was drunk
-Gatsby never got $25,000 that Cody left him because Ella Kaye never let him take it

*A thought came into the classroom and we began to think about how Nick looks at/feels about Gatsby. We realized that Nick thinks about Gatsby almost in a "highly" way- he can tolerate him and he enjoys being with him. Some began to say that maybe Nick was in love with Gatsby, but I think it's more or so of an admiration kind of relationship.

  • In the beginning of the chapter, I didn't really understand but what I got is that Gatsby was a fisherman and he ends up meeting Dan Cody - this led to Gatsby fascinating about wanting to become a wealthy and successful man. Money does change a lot of people, it motivates them to do unimaginable things, and that's why I'm very curious as to how Jay Gatsby managed to become such a rich man, when he never inherited any of the money from Dan Cody. How did Jay Gatsby become so successful?
