Now It's A Party! (Gatsby Chapter 3)

A few seconds ago I just finished reading Chapter 3 of Gatsby, here's what I was able to capture.

  • What rumors about Gatsby did the two girls and Jordan talk about? Why do you think Gatsby is so mysterious?
The two girls, the yellow dress twins, and Jordan eagerly talked about many rumors, including one that states that Gatsby killed a man once(quite possibly during war). Another rumor was that he was a German soldier during the war, which leads them to presume that he is capable of committing a murder, perhaps an innocent murder but a murder nonetheless. Gatsby could possibly be so mysterious because he enjoys the casual and routine gossip about him being spread around but only the good gossip.
  • What does Nick call the man in Gatsby's library?
When Nick first encounter the man, he calls him a "stout, middle-aged man with owl-eyed spectacles.." which I presume means that he appeared to him a little crazy. He also mentioned that he was somewhat of a drunk possibly. Later on, towards the end of the chapter, Nick goes on to call the man a criminal because of the car incident.
  • What does Nick initially imagine Gatsby to look like?
Nick initially assumed that Gatsby would look like a "florid and corpulent person in his middle years" in other words, a flushed-faced, big bellied old man.
  • What does Nick find out about Jordan?
Nick finds out that Jordan is someone who instinctively avoids clever shrewd men. The main secret that he unfolds is that Jordan is incredibly (incredibly) dishonest. She's fake to everyone in order to please others, therefore resulting in her being dishonest with everyone including herself.
  • Nick's cardinal virtue.
"I am one of the few honest people that I have ever known."
Nick probably mentions this because so far into the book, all he has been around are rumors and lies about many people (including those he knows well enough) and he realizes just how fake and big-mouthed everyone can be. Through the situations of hearing all these dishonest rumors about people and those who are spreading them, he knows he isn't one of those people which shows that he is one of the most honest people he'll ever meet.
