There were many assumptions of what the central message of The Great Gatsby is.
My group's was "To live in the moment because the past cannot be changed to obtain the American Dream," and I'd like to stick with it. Gatsby spent almost his whole life trailing behind Daisy just fulfill the idea of finally reaching the love of his life, but he never got her. It's the true representation that the American Dream is, in the end, unattainable. He got his social status, I mean he rarely had problems with anyone, and everyone enjoyed all his parties. He was financially well-off, never having to worry about much and even spent his money for others to have a good time. Yet, in the end, if you really think about it,he was doing all that for Daisy and to pull her back in. Gatsby tried so hard to erase Daisy's past during their present just so they could live a better future together but Daisy was already in a toxic marriage that she couldn't even admit that she didn't love her husband at one point. Gatsby worked hard for his Dream, but he never really got to complete in the end, did he?
