˗ˏˋ Final Reflection for American Literature 2019-2020 ˎˊ˗
This year was unlike any other and I know most of you know why. The transition from an open-learning environment inside a classroom to a limited learning environment inside our house -- it was rough. I've learned so much throughout this course, some things didn't even relate to the English language but they were very useful to know!
So, without further ado, here's my last post for this course. :)
From the beginning, what made our course different from any other course I have ever taken is that it was way more open minded. As in, our teacher actually took our opinions and considered them in a lot of our classroom situations. He asked us what we thought of whatever we planned on doing, even if not a lot of people incorporated their insights, he still tried to consider the students before the work.
As I look back on our experience together, what I found most meaningful was that Dr. Preston always tried to be there for us. They always say that the English teachers are the ones closest to their students and try to understand them better, I guess they're right. I still remember how whenever he would set us free for the last half of every class he would say, "If you need help, feedback, or just someone to talk to -- you know where to find me!" It was always reassuring and meaningful to me even if I never really showed it. 😭
As I consider the work I've done, what I'm most proud of is the fact that even through everything, I still always tried to complete my work. Since the beginning I would always tell myself that my organization and time management were never the best. Throughout, practically, the whole school year I never could seem to try and organized myself. Now that I'm almost done with this year, I'm proud of myself for completing all of the work that I possibly could. Even through times like this I never gave up, and that's something I will thank myself for.
Something I wish I would've done better or differently is probably try and pay attention in class. Obviously I learned a lot from whatever I did pay attention to, but I feel like there were some things I could've learned better if I tried to. Sometimes, as students, we get tired and restless from sitting in a chair for 50 minutes and trying to pay the best of our attention to the teacher. It gets hard, for a lot of us, but I do kind of regret not trying to learn a few things with the same determination I showed to other topics.
As I look forward, what I learned from this course that will help me in the future is 100% the interview practice that Dr. Preston assigned us to do. It was really nerve wracking, for a lot of us, but we all managed to go through them and honestly I felt that it was a nice experience. Doing an interview with juniors in high school I'd say is one of the most important things any teacher has ever done. Not only is it around the age group that students start to get jobs, but that practice and all the tips that we each received will come in handy for our futures!
I'm choosing the "letter grade" option for the grading this year! The grade I believe I earned is an A because like I previously said, I tried my best in this class and I'm proud of it. Some of the experiences that I've had in the class I've never had in other classes, and I believe that I handled them well and with all the effort I could afford. It's nice to look back at all the moments we shared as a class, but some of the moments I shared with myself were just as good.
