Online meeting notes
(Last) week's online meeting notes! Brought to you by the May 15th Live.
- Reviewed some things from the last meeting we had
- Went over Catch-22 and what it meant/it's meaning
Book Notes:
- Hungry Joe had some nightmares at night that kept everyone awake
- Huple is introduced
- The 15-year-old pilot who lied about his age to get into the Army
- Fascism: governmental system led by a dictator with complete power
- (ex: Germany, Adolf Hitler)
- Doc Daneeka has so little empathy, even towards Hungry Joe who happens to be suffering through a lot because of his nightmares
- Ash and soot
- "The Valley of Ash" reference/connection to The Great Gatsby
- "two giant eyes looking over it" the eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleberg
- Hungry Joe had a knack for being able to persuade naked girls into letting him take pictures of them
- he would fail tremendously because he would forget to put new film, turn on certain settings, or even forget to take off the lens cap
- Wily: tricky (ex. Wily Coyote)
- Cajolery: persuasion
- Idolatry: being idolized/idolizing someone
- "Yossarian was laid up in the hospital with the burst of clap he had caught on a low-level mission over a Wac in bushes..." (page 38)
- "burst of clap" slang for an STD
- "Wac" is short for WAC meaning Women's Air Corps
- Basically meaning that Yossarian was in the bushes with a woman in the service and that's how he got what he got
- Colonel Cathcart had increased the number of missions needed to go home by raising it from 25 to 30
- Hungry Joe is almost an example of what could happen when doing the right thing for such a long time under some possibly really wrong circumstances
- would complete a tour of 25 or even 50 missions and expect to be sent home. He would never be sent home.
- Colonel Korn...like Kernel of corn
- The book shows a sense of humanity
