What's In A Name
Started chapter 8 of Catch-22, Lieutenant Scheisskopf.
Scheisskopf's last name is actually german and it means..."shithead" if it's translated roughly. Through this, we learn that Joseph Heller tends to try and have fun with the last names and names of his characters. His tone towards the characters isn't necessarily the nicest, in a sense I feel like he's trying to prove a point and expose how officers and soldiers really are. He's trying to tell the readers that not everything about being in a war is all brave and heroic. I think that's the major theme in the book the fact that Heller is trying to show how cowardly and dumb (?) some soldiers and people in the war can really get, like trying to avoid actually fighting by faking sickness or thinking that you're on top of everyone else and saying nonsense that really doesn't make sense no matter how hard you try and understand. In this chapter, it almost seemed like the chairman of the Action Board, Lieutenant Scheisskopf, and Major Metcalf were really just trying to make Clevinger go through absolute hell when they were interrogating him and speaking nonsense.
